Transfer Station

The Transfer Station may be used for the disposal of household waste generated in Benson by residents or taxpayers who purchase an annual permit by April 1 of each year.

Stickers are required for all items except recycling and food scraps.

The fee schedule below is an estimate based on volume and may be adjusted for unusually heavy items since the town pays disposal fees by weight.

Stickers

Can be purchased at the Town Office, or G & L General Store. Bulky items must have stickers before entering the transfer station and must be offloaded from a vehicle under the direction of the Attendant. Each bag needs one sticker, which are two dollars apiece.

We have free disposal for batteries and electronics. Recycling is single stream and also free of charge. There is a compost station available for disposal of food scraps.

The following materials are RECYCLED for FREE. Please sort them into the proper containers.

Single Stream Recycling

Glass Bottles and Jars (all colors)
Plastics (recycling symbol 1 through 7) (Including Plastic Bags with recycling symbols)
Boxboard (uncorrugated cardboard excluding soda/beer boxes)
No Lids with Gaskets
No Household Glass/Ceramics
No Styrofoam or “Peanuts” Please!

Leaf and Yard Waste

Leaf and Yard Waste is accepted for FREE – other options – start a pile to compost at home.

Construction & Demolition Debris

Loose construction and demolition debris is accepted on a space available basis and priced by the attendant,  heavy/dense materials such as shingles or sheetrock will be charged at a higher rate.

Batteries

Alkaline batteries (Primary) & Rechargeable batteries

(less than 9 lbs.)

Electronics

Seven or fewer Computers, laptops, monitors, televisions, printers, and peripherals are accepted at the facility for FREE from any Vermont resident. Please speak with Transfer Station Attendant for further information.

Metal Dumpster Items

Metal Lids (including gaskets)
Cans (including labels)
Aluminum Foil and Pie Tins
Scrap Metal, Sheet Metal Pipes, and Wire
Metal Barrels (except those contaminated with chemicals)
Metal with plastic attached is permitted, such as strollers, VCRs, etc.
Major household appliances including stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers, water heaters, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and large fans.

Large Batteries, Cell Phones, Laser Cartridges, InkJet Cartridges, Electronics, Hazardous Waste, Rechargeable Batteries, Refrigerators, and Air Conditioners.
