The Solid Waste Alliance Communities (SWAC) is announcing that the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources (ANR) has approved its Solid Waste Implementation Plan (SWIP) for the 2025–2030 term.
The SWIP is a required regional document that outlines how the member towns of Benson, Chittenden, Fair Haven, Middletown Springs, Pawlet, Poultney, Rutland Town, Shrewsbury, Sudbury, and West Haven will manage solid waste, recycling, and hazardous materials. The plan ensures regional compliance with Vermont’s Universal Recycling law for both residents and businesses.
Key components of the 2025–2030 plan include:
- Comprehensive Disaster Debris Management: The creation of detailed management plans for each of the ten member towns to coordinate the collection, staging, and disposal of specialized debris following major storm or emergency events.
- Hazardous Waste Collection: Continued scheduling of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection events to ensure safe disposal of toxic materials.
- Public Information Resources: Maintenance of the “What Do I Do With…?” online guide, which provides residents and businesses with local disposal options for landfill-banned items and hazardous materials. The guide can be accessed directly at: https://rutlandcountyswac.org/whatdoidowith/
The complete, approved SWIP document is available for public inspection on the SWAC website at rutlandcountyswac.org. Information regarding local recycling, trash disposal, and specialty materials for residents and businesses can also be found on the site.
