Clean Wood: BANNED FROM THE LANDFILL
The Law: Under Vermont’s Universal Recycling Law (Act 148), Clean Wood is strictly banned from the landfill. This material is diverted from the trash to be repurposed into mulch or used as fuel for renewable energy recovery.
What is Banned (The List):
-
Natural Wood: Tree limbs, branches, and logs greater than 1 inch in diameter.
-
Stumps: Tree stumps and root masses.
-
Clean Lumber: Untreated, unpainted, and unstained wood—including wooden pallets and dimensional lumber scraps (like 2x4s).
Where to Take It:
-

-
2026 Update: As of January 1, 2026, NO PERMIT IS REQUIRED to use the scale for clean wood disposal.
-
Important Disposal Requirements:
-
-
“Clean” means Untreated: Wood that has been painted, stained, glued, or pressure-treated (such as plywood, OSB, or pressure-treated decking) is NOT “Clean Wood.” These items must be disposed of as regular trash or Construction & Demolition (C&D) debris.
-
Invasive Species: To prevent the spread of pests like the Emerald Ash Borer, do not move wood long distances. If you have invasive plants (like Japanese Knotweed), notify the attendant before unloading.
