Scrap Metal: RECYCLING IS MANDATORY

  • The Law: Under Vermont Law, scrap metal is banned from the landfill. It must be separated from your trash and recycled.

  • What is “Scrap”?: Any item that is at least 80% metal by weight. The type of metal (steel, aluminum, copper, brass, etc.) does not matter.

  • Common Items: Bicycles, metal desks, filing cabinets, bookshelves, grills (remove propane tank!), lawn furniture, pots and pans, and tire rims (remove tire!).

Where to Take It:

  • Town Transfer Stations (Residents Only):

    • Shrewsbury: (802) 492-3511. Accepts scrap metal in designated containers.

    • Fair Haven: (802) 265-8291. Accepts scrap metal from residents (local permit/punch card required).

    • Rutland Town: (802) 747-9013. Accepts scrap metal at the Northwood Park station.

    • Benson & Pawlet: Both towns have designated scrap metal dumpsters for residents.

    • Chittenden, Middletown Springs, Sudbury, Tinmouth, & West Haven: Most local stations accept scrap metal. Because space is limited in smaller towns, always check with your attendant before unloading large items.

  • Local Salvage Yards:

    • Hubbard Brothers (North Clarendon): (802) 773-2259

    • MacScrap (Rutland): (802) 773-2911

    • Scrappy’s Inc. (Rutland): (802) 342-2264

  • Granville (NY) Transfer Station (Earth Waste & Metal): 8536 NY-22, Granville, NY | (518) 642-3026

    • Accepted: Asphalt Shingles, Sheetrock (Drywall), and Scrap Metal.

    • Fees: Private, weight-based fees apply.

  • Gleason Road Transfer Station | 14 Gleason Rd, Rutland | (802) 775-7209

    • NO PERMIT REQUIRED: As of 2026, any resident can access the scrap metal recycling area at Gleason Road without a permit.

⚠️ The “White Goods” (Appliances) Exception:

Large appliances—often called “White Goods”—usually require special handling and have disposal fees:

  • Freon Appliances: Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers MUST go to a facility equipped to drain coolant safely (like Gleason Road or Hubbard Brothers).

  • Non-Freon Appliances: Washers, dryers, and stoves are accepted at most stations for a fee.

  • Electronics: Items like VCRs, TVs, and computers are handled separately as E-Waste. See the Vermont ANR E-Cycles Page for details.

💡 Pro-Tips for Residents:

  • Drain the Fluids: Lawnmowers, weed whackers, and small engines must have all gas and oil drained before they can go in a scrap pile.

  • Remove the Non-Metal: Please strip off large pieces of plastic, wood, or upholstery if possible.

  • Propane Tanks: NEVER put propane or oxygen tanks in the scrap metal pile. They are an explosion hazard. Visit the official SWAC Propane FAQ for disposal instructions.
