Hazardous & Banned Materials: NEVER IN THE TRASH

The Law: Certain materials are strictly banned from landfill disposal in Vermont because they are explosive, flammable, toxic, or pose a biological risk to waste workers and the environment. Never place the following items in your household trash or recycling bin.

Items Banned for Safety:

  • Explosives & Ammunition: Fireworks, flares, small arms ammunition, and gunpowder.

    • Note: These are NOT accepted at transfer stations. Please contact your local Police Department or the Vermont State Police for disposal instructions.

  • Flammables & Fuels: Gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and camping stove fuels.

  • Pressurized Cylinders: Propane tanks (all sizes), fire extinguishers, helium tanks, and oxygen cylinders.

  • Sharps & Medical Waste: Syringes, needles, and lancets.

    • Safe Disposal: Place home-generated sharps in a rigid, puncture-resistant plastic container (like a detergent bottle), tape the cap shut, label it “DO NOT RECYCLE,” and place it in the trash.

Toxic & Chemical Hazards (HHW):

  • Household Hazardous Waste (HHW): Items labeled “Danger,” “Poison,” or “Caution,” such as pesticides, pool chemicals, mercury thermostats, and strong acids. These are typically collected during special events.
